Marcus Redwood’s name is synonymous with the UK’s most infamous nightclub doorman who has been involved in 1,000 knockouts and 3,000 fights at the doors of clubs and pubs across Southern England since 1979. Marcus Redwood was born in October 1962 and grew up on a small farm near Ramsgate, where he was a bullied schoolboy before becoming 6ft 2ins, 19.5 stone enforcer, who never lost a one-on-one confrontation as a whole of his door work. Marcus Redwood is also a 2026 author, podcast contributor, director of security companies and charity worker in Thailand. It’s the real-life tale of Britain’s most infamous bouncer.
Who Is Marcus Redwood? Early Life & The Making of a Doorman
Who Is Marcus Redwood? Early Life & The Making of a Doorman
From Ramsgate Farm to Boxing Ring
Marcus Redwood was born on a small farm in the seaside town of Ramsgate. At every school he attended, he was subjected to vicious bullying. This angered and frustrated him with the violence and intimidation he had suffered, and he decided that he would never allow himself to be bullied again, so he turned to boxing.
That was a pivotal moment that turned everything around. Boxing was a part of Marcus Redwood’s life that built his confidence, discipline and physicality up.
First Door Work at 16
His first informal job as a door security was for the landlord of his local pub at age 16, in exchange for an unlimited supply of free beer, a job that eventually became formal, at age 18. There was no training, uniforms, radios or metal detectors in those days.
Marcus Redwood was a tree chopper for the local council during the day. He would be at clubs and pubs at night. Marcus Redwood was 6ft2ins and weighed 19.5 stone when at his peak.
Marcus Redwood’s 40-Year Door Career: 3,000 Fights, 1,000 Knockouts
The Numbers Behind the Legend
Marcus Redwood was involved in about 3,000 fights during his career of some 40 years over the doors of clubs and pubs in Southern England, and he knocked out some 1000 men. What is particularly impressive is that he never lost in a one-on-one match all his door work.
Marcus Redwood is referred to as “Britain’s Most Notorious Doorman” and “the UK’s most notorious nightclub doorman”.
Guns, Knives & Assassination Attempts
Guns and knives were an ever-present danger to Marcus. Frequently, when people were ejected from clubs, they threatened to come back with a gun and knife, and some did. An outsider invited to a club could be a gangster or be a member of a gangster family. Retaliation and recrimination was always a possibility.
Marcus Redwood was the target of London hitmen outside his home, who tried to shoot and kill him. He has survived more than 2,000 intense brawls, held several gun-wielding faces down and even had an attempted murder on him — not just a threat — but a murder plot. “It cost five thousand dollars to get me shot.”
